Skiers emerge from the clouds to find a snow-covered wonderland. This picture was taken at the top of Grand Targhee Ski Resort in Alta, Wyoming. There was a solid layer of clouds splitting the resort in half. It was a perfect day at the top, but crappy on the bottom. Visible sunlight is white. Most natural materials absorb some sunlight, which gives them their color. Snow, however, reflects most of the sunlight.
The complex structure of snow crystals results in countless tiny surfaces from which visible light is efficiently reflected. What little sunlight is absorbed by snow is absorbed uniformly over the wavelengths of visible light, thus giving snow its white appearance.

Question: I have lived in Texas my whole life and am going to Massachusetts for Thanksgiving. It is snowing there. What does snow feel like? Is it really cold! I am so excited. If you could just tell me some tips about snow.
Best Answers:
** It’s like ice that melts instantly in your hands. It’s not cold at first, but bundle up.
** I’ve lived in Texas my whole life too and I first saw snow a few years ago…it’s cold and wet! Like, in the movies they make it look all soft and fluffy and like soft powder…but no! It’s not like that at all! Think of a snow cone (hard ones, slushy ones, flaky ones…all the kinds of snow cones) that’s what snow is like. The worst part about it is if you roll around in it, it’ll get on your clothes and melt and then your clothes will be soaking wet and freezing. And snow is very very cold, I couldn’t touch it with my bare hands.
** Snow is soft and on occasions fluffy, when it hits the ground, or snow, it has a soft sound to it. Since snow is made of tiny ice crystal in many different shapes, is is cold, below 32 degrees F. If you get enough snow, you can actually make a snowman.
Definitions of snow on the Web (from Google):
- Precipitation falling from clouds in the form of ice crystals. A layer of snowflakes (white crystals of frozen water) covering the ground. (Princeton)
- Snow is a type of precipitation in the form of crystalline water ice, consisting of a multitude of snowflakes that fall from clouds. Since snow is composed of small ice particles, it is a granular material. It has an open and therefore soft structure, unless packed by external pressure. (Wikipedia)
- The frozen, crystalline state of water that falls as precipitation. (Wiktionary)

To do this, set microscope slides, cover slips and super glue outside when it’s snowing.
